Is it OK for an organization to publish defaulters’ bills publicly?

I recently came across an email on a mailing list. The email was addressed to someone who hadn’t paid his membership dues to the organization. It stated, apart from mentioning the delay in paying dues, that since the addressee hadn’t replied to personal emails but had been found to be active on the email list, the sender considered it appropriate to send the reminder to the mailing list.

I consider it incorrect, because it raises questions about an individual’s privacy. An individual’s finances, which includes membership dues to different organizations, is personal information. There can be no justification for announcing it publicly unless it actually involves litigation or other serious conflict.

I have also been wondering if an individual’s privacy is actually seen as something significant in India at all. It is not uncommon to see people exposed in different ways if you move around, and so one’s mind is likely to get insensitive about subtle things like privacy and respect for an individual. Should we allow such environmentally-induced insensitivity to envelope our perspective?

Every individual deserves to be treated in a respectful way. There are no exceptions.
