Today has been a really good day. One of my best friends is having her bday party tomorrow and she invited me to it. The classes were comprehendible. And..
I have met my marathon target.

When I started running in the area around Stanford this summer, I hadn’t even considered ever participating in a marathon, or a half marathon for that matter. I just wanted to run because its really beautiful up around the Stanford dish. You get to see such a panoramic view of the bay area from up there. There’s a point aong the route where the view suddenly changes and becomes utterly lovely. Its fresh and greeen and the fresh air from the whole area seems to pass through there. I have spent quite a few moments taking in the breathtaking view. Its a moment that stays with you.

So I ran for a couple of weeks this summer, and somehow ended up doing the san francisco progressive marathon(running a marathon over a couple of days or weeks – I took 4 sessions of about 7 miles each to complete it). In a way I was cheating, because I was doing it over multiple sessions and on the real SF marathon day we only had to do 5k. But heck, had I ever thought I’d run in a marathon. Sure I had wished I’d do one day, but I hadn’t really thought of doing it seriously.

And then Lien got me into signing up for the Boston half marathon. We were actually planning to do the Atlanta marathon over thanksgiving so we had plenty of time to prepare. But then Boston is right here :P and it seemed like a good excuse for him to fly down. I haven’t seen Lien for about 10 years now – we were together in high school. His other strong reason was to visit his good friend Kelly who just started at Harvard and is a wonderful person. I spent an entire evening recently walking around boston, almost a 6 hour nonstop walk. She’s the ultimate curious creature I have seen – she’ll make you realize stuff you had never known about yourself.

So today, I was worried. I had gotten sick last weekend and I wasn’t feeling totally fit. And my distance has been lagging at 8 miles. But after my regular distance I just wanted to do it today. So I went past my dorm and continued running on memorial. And I’m done with my target in 2:20 hours – actually better timing than I’d have predicted. The timing might get a little better over the coming days before the actual run.

Running is such an excellent tutor of self discipline.
